Raw Dog Food!

Saved in:-   General

Raw_dogHad to share this with you!  If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you may be familiar with Dylan, the raw food rabbit.  Well apparently there’s a whole world of raw pets out there, including man’s best friend – the dog!

This website is selling copies of ‘Raw Food Dog: Make It Easy For You and Your Dog’ by Carina Beth MacDonald.  Here’s what they’re saying about it…

" Great News! ‘Raw Dog Food: Make It Easy for You and Your Dog’ received the 2003 Dog Writers Association of America Award for best book under 100 pages.  Find out why!  Raw feeding is the hottest topic in dog care today.  You may have heard about the "BARF" diet – Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods.  Learn why and how to feed your dog this new (but really OLD) diet.  ‘Raw Dog Food: Make it Easy for You and Your Dog’ explains in simple, friendly and understandable terms the logic behind this approach.  This fun and slightly irreverent book shows you how feeding your dog can be effective, economical, and easy for you, and healthy for your dog.  Learn how to make it work for your dog and you!"

I wonder if the pet owners are raw?  Maybe they haven’t even considered it!  What sort of challenges would you face having a raw dog?  Teeth problems?  Cravings?  Teaching your Great Dane how to use a Vita Mix?

Despite my casual frivolity on the matter, I do actually think it’s a wonderful thing to do for your pet.  I’d love to hear from anyone who’s feeding their pets raw food and particularly anyone who’s got this book!

I feed raw to my 2 dogs and 2 cats and have been amazed at the health benefits. They have shiny coats, white teeth, and are in great shape. I have read Carina Beth Macdonald’s book along with many others. Its a great starter book as it shows how simple feeding raw can be!

I’m switching my cats and dog to a raw diet, but its costing me a fortune because I foster cats and currently have 18 cats living with me! Plus 4 dogs. When the foster pets have been rehomed it’ll be much easier. (The animal shelters are all full because of the credit crunch and my vet nurse keeps sending them here).

I have a kitten who was 13 weeks when he came to me and was an extremely picky eater. He refused to eat the healthy natural brand I fed him, and would only eat whiskas, and then he would only pick at it. He even refused roast chicken. He looked puny and thin and I was really worried he was going to die. I didn’t offer him raw food at first because its so hard to switch cats I though it would be impossible with him. I was wrong – he devoured raw turkey the first time he discovered it, and found he is equally enthusiastic for raw chicken, ground beef and salmon,

and even chicken wings (full of bones and hard to chew). Within a week he had fattened up dramatically, and looked well. He steals everyone else dinner so ends up eating at least twice as much as the others.
The other cats all love raw meat now, though some of them wont eat it unless I chop it into tiny pieces. The rest will eat anything. It was hard at first because they couldnt be bothered with all the chewing but they came round eventually.

Since my dogs have been having some raw meals (I can’t afford all raw with this many) they refuse to eat processed treats. At Christmas they wouldn’t eat anything from their stockings at all. Usually they love them. I found dogs have no trouble switching, mine much prefer raw food. The challenges are the expense, the serving (which is kind of gross), and for me, buying so much meat as a vegetarian. I’m trying to feed them on meat that people throw away – people give me their leftovers (which are cooked), and shops give me some but not enough.

This is the book that I used when switching my dog to a raw diet about 1 year. Here’s a short list of the changes I’ve seen in him:
-After about a week – His seemingly Attention deficit disorder vanished. He became quite focused during training.
    - Over the course of several months – his extreme dandruff problem vanished. I can give him a good thorough scratching on his bum, and not a flake to be seen.
And it’s SO easy. His a big dog, so no chopping/grinding in needed.
