Raw Food Recipes: How To Easily Open A Young Coconut

Saved in:-   Raw Food Diet Video,Raw Food Recipes

So many times I see people struggling to get into one of nature’s finest bounties: young coconuts.

Even if they’ve been taught the ‘correct’ way to get them open with a cleaver, using the heal of the blade to bust them open, it can still be intimidating to actually do.

In this video I show you an easier way to get one of these babies open, but with a bonus…

You have a really nice and very impressive and unusual bowl to serve soup in, wowing your guests.

Thanks to Moi, aka “Big Moi” for turning me on to this way of opening coconuts.

What is the song at the intro to all of your videos?

  • http://www.therawchef.com Russell James Raw Food

It's not any song in particular, it's a piece of stock music for use in videos etc.

You made it look so easy. I tried opening a young coconut once, and swore never again. I didn't know they had a soft spot!!
    Thanks for this video :))

  • Maggieravensfire

Thanks for this great demonstration…..it looks so much easier and infinitely safer than the way I'm currently opening a coconut. And way quieter!!!

  • Margotbach

Dear Russel I 've never seen a coconut like that in Holland nor in France????

    Hi Russell,
I enjoy all of your videos. Thanks you for this one.

Thanks, Russell. Certainly an improvement on what I've been doing. But I've read that the outside white husk is treated with formaldehyde to keep it white longer. So I've been using rubber gloves so that I don't touch the husk with my hands and haven't yet figured out a way to pour the water out without it running down the side into the bowl as yours did on the video. Would appreciate your comments or suggestions

    Thanks Russell! Really helpful!!!

    Russell, thank you!

I can't wait to try this method, much easier then my current way of opening them.

This is by far one of the easiest ways to open a coconut, but a caution for most people handling a sharp knife is to keep their hands where there is no chance of them possibly 'slipping' during the cutting process and putting a nice slice in their hand.

My preference is to use a small paring knife to cut away the leftover bark as I run the meat under a slow stream of water – works extremely well at cleaning the meat.

  • Stephana

Did I miss something? Did you actually slice around to make that lid come off? I'm on my way to get coconuts now so I'll try from what I saw – but I never saw you actually cut that circle to make the lid -

  • Amanda

Thanks Russell, can't wait to try opening one this way!

Wow! Russell I am impressed! I tried to open one coconut a long time ago and found it so scary my husband rescued me and opened it. I have not made anything with young coconut since. With this method the scary part is removed. Thank you, thank you, thank you. My neighbors have been asking for that long ago recipe to be made again. Now I can do it thanks to your video.

Oh wow! formaldehyde! I was wondering how come it was still so white!

Love this! You make it look so easy. Thanks for the video!

That definitely seems like a much safer way to open the coconut. I always offered a silent prayer using the hacking method before I would begin.

  • barbara

That's amazing .when you lifted the lid, it was perfectly round…I've never been able to get the lid off so perfectly..i'll try again..

    thanks..I love all your videos..

  • Blended05

Looks really easy! I need to go buy some young coconuts to give this a try.

  • Earthlove

I watched this video 4-5 times and tonight I tried to duplicate this method – and failed. You should have seen my kitchen bench… what a mess! Bits of chard-like strands strewn all over the counter. I was hacking away to get that darn thing open. Maybe I couldn't find the mystical 'soft' spot? Mmm. And like Stephana I wondered how the top broke off so perfectly. Russell makes everything look so easy!

Once you find the soft spot (which can take some practice) all you need to do is lift it up and it'll break off in that perfect round circle every time.

  • http://www.therawchef.com Russell James Raw Food

That's the point of doing it this way – you don't have to cut it if you find the soft spot the 'lid' will just lift off in a perfect circle by itself.

I did it! Thanks for the easy instructions :)

Great! Just some points to ponder. Did you know that coconut is considered a fruit pharmacy? Coconut has so many healing properties that's why its called a mini pharmacy.

do you have any tips for brown coconuts? they seem to be much harder with less milk but are more commonly stocked in supermarkets in the UK?x
